This coffee grinder timer controller controls the run time of the grinder. It can be used for grinders with an on/off switch or with a timer switch. For grinders with internal contactor such as the Mazzer with automatic switch (On/Off + Start), our model J72MA  should be used.

The controller has three buttons on the top of the box. Two of them can be programmed to run the grinder for a specific duration (from 0.01 second to 99 minutes). User can set one button for single shot and the other for double shot espresso. The third button is for manually controlling the grinder. It will turn on the grinder when pressed. The time duration of the manual control is displayed. It can be used for fine tuning the single or double shot timer setting.

The controller also has an accumulative timer that accumulates the running time of the grinder until it is reset by the user.  The timer unit is programmable. User can set it to second, minute, cups, or convert it to weight units (such as gram, ounce,  or pound) with a simple calibration. It is a useful feature for bookkeeping in a commercial coffee shop .

For grinders with a spring loaded switch or a mechanical timer switch, users needs to find a way to keep the switch at on position. This link provides examples on how to keep the switch at on position for Rancilio Rocky and Mazzer with Time switch.

The output socket will accept either US 120 standard plug (NEMA 5-15P), or European standard plug (CEE7/7). The output voltage is the same as the input voltage. In other words,  if the controller is plugged into a 120V socket, the output will be 120V.  If it is plugged into 220V socket, the output will be 220V.  The input socket is the standard socket used on computers (IEC320 C14). The controller internal relay is rated 10A for 120V and 7 A for 240V (the rating is for resistive load. For the inductive load such as motor, the rating is lower, depending on the inductance).

In addition to control the grinder, this timer can also be used to time the espresso shot. Traditionally, users have to use a stopwatch to time the shot. It is inconvenient because the stopwatch has to be started and stopped at the same time as the brew switch. This timer automates the shot timing process.  When user turns on the brew pump, the top display of the timer will start to count. When the brew pump is off, the timer stops counting. The display will automatically reset when brew pump is turned on again, or when user runs the grinder control.

Timing the espresso machine is done by installing two wires and a converter box in the espresso machine. The two wires are connected to the brew switch. User only needs a screw driver and a pair of pliers to install them. The converter converts the AC pump signal to a DC control signal for the timer.  Buyer needs to specify the voltage of the espresso machine so that correct converter can be provided.
